Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued for Long Island

Strong, possibly damaging storms are in the weekend forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Long Island as strong, possibly damaging storms target the region this weekend.

The outlook reads:

THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND FLASH FLOODING ON SUNDAY...MAINLY IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS COULD PRODUCE HEAVY RAIN WITH MAXIMUM HOURLY RAINFALL RATES APPROACHING 1 INCH PER HOUR. IF THESE HEAVIER SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MOVE OVER THE SAME LOCATIONS... FLASH FLOODING OF URBAN...LOW LYING...AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS WOULD BE POSSIBLE. A FEW THUNDERSTORMS COULD ALSO BECOME SEVERE...WITH DAMAGING WIND GUSTS OF AT LEAST 58 MPH.

On the bright side, Saturday continues to look gorgeous, with partly sunny skies and a high near 80.

Friday: Showers likely, mainly before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 71. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8pm. Cloudy, with a low around 65. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Sunday: Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 9am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog before 9am. High near 74. Southeast wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog. Low around 65. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 78.
