Lifeguards Back On Duty As Temps May Top Record Highs; Is Hurricane Maria A Threat Next Week?
The first weekend of fall won't feel like fall at all. Check out the steamy forecast plus the latest track for Hurricane Maria.

If you were looking forward to some crisp fall weather this weekend, you will be sorely disappointed. But if you were hoping for one (or two) more beach days, well, we have some good news for you.
Temperatures will approach and may top records high on the first weekend of fall on Long Island. It will be so warm that lifeguards are heading back to their posts at four state park beaches. Skies will be sunny with highs in the mid-80s on both Saturday and Sunday.
Lifeguards will be on duty at Jones Beach (fields 4 and 6), Robert Moses (fields 2 and 5), Sunken Meadow and Hither Hills state parks from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this weekend.

If you plan on taking a dip, though, be cautious.
"Due to long period swells from both [hurricanes] Jose and Maria, there will be a prolonged period of rough surf at the ocean beaches, with the likelihood of a high risk of rip currents," the National Weather Service says.

There's a chance that Hurricane Maria, currently a Category 3 storm with winds of 125 mph, will become a concern for Long Island late next week.

The latest track from the National Hurricane Center has Maria well offshore of North Carolina on Wednesday. Most forecast models then have Maria making a sharp turn out to sea, but a lot can change this far out.
"Maria will move between the East Coast of the United States and Bermuda by the middle of next week, but it is too soon to determine what, if any, direct impacts there might be in these areas," the NHC says.
