Town Of Smithtown To Collect Hazardous Waste
Residents can safely and freely dispose of chemicals like paints and solvents at the April event. Here's what you need to know.
KINGS PARK, NY — The Town of Smithtown is slated to host its next Household Hazardous Waste Collection on April 24, according to the town. The free event is scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Smithtown Municipal Services Facility, at 85 Old Northport Road, Kings Park.
The collection will be run in partnership with the Municipal Services Facility and the Department of Public Safety.
Residents were asked to wear face masks and not leave their cars due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event is for Smithtown township residents only, and proof of residency will be strictly enforced.

At the October 2020 event, Smithtown Municipal Services Facility employees worked with Department of Environment and Waterways Environmental Director David Barnes and Solid Waste Coordinator Mike Engelmann to safely secure more than forty-five 55-gallon drums, two 5-gallon pails, seven 1-cubic yard boxes and two full 30-cubic yard roll-off containers loaded up with paints, solvents, etc. Nearly 22 tons worth of hazardous materials were collected. Roughly 490 Smithtown households participated.
Wastes collected for disposal include: waste oil-based paints, flammable paints, gasoline, paint thinners, waste gases, petroleum distillates, flammable solids, oxidizers liquids and solids, sodium/potassium nitrates, acids, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, toxic liquids (ex: Chlordane, etc.) and solids, lacquers, lithium batteries, battery acids and various other toxic compounds.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is expected to reimburse the Town for 50 percent of the contractor expense for this event. Materials are collected and manifested for disposal by Care Environmental Corp.
