2 Local High School Seniors Earn Scholarships For Charity Work
Mamaroneck HS senior Lorena Marron and Rye Neck HS senior Ethan Chin were the winners of the Lions Club essay contest about charity work.

MAMARONECK, NY — Two high school seniors earned help defraying the cost of college, thanks to their charity work, their writing acumen and the Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club.
The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club awarded two scholarships this year as part of its high school essay contest. Mamaroneck High School senior Lorena Marron and Rye Neck High School senior Ethan Chin were the winners of $1,000 awards to help cover college expenses. Ava Delaney and Alexander Yuji Kono of Mamaroneck High School and Sofia Palacios Ferrer and Gabriel Miller from Rye Neck High School each received honorable mentions for their entries.
The Lions Club scholarship has been given to a Mamaroneck graduating senior for each of the past 20 years. The award is intended for students who have performed meaningful charitable service in the local community.

Entrants were asked to submit an essay describing their charitable work and the impact it had on the local community. The essays were judged with all personal information removed so the entries could be reviewed anonymously. The scholarship applications were judged, in part, on how well the works embodied the Lions’ motto, “We Serve.”
“The essays demonstrated a deep commitment to service and creativity by the students to apply their time and talents to help solve a need in the community,” judge and committee leader Margaret Käufer said of the submissions received. “From advancing literacy to helping to bridge technology gaps during the pandemic, these students are an inspiration.”

In total, 15 essays were submitted by students. Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions President Phil Oldham encouraged the winners and applicants to find a local Lions organization wherever they attend college to continue their service under the Lions’ now familiar motto, “We Serve.”
