Mamaroneck H.S. was the first in New York to start a student-led program to manage honey bee hives. The Bee Team offers students the chance to create bee habitats, harvest honey, and gain hands-on knowledge of the environmental factors that impact these vital pollinating insects.

As the film considers the reasons for the decline of the honey bee population in recent decades, the filmmakers propose concrete actions Larchmont and Mamaroneck homeowners can take today to help protect the insects.

The film was created in partnership with the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Healthy Yards Project to “raise awareness about the importance of bees and the need to create a healthy environment for their continued existence.”

The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Healthy Yards Project is an initiative of the Town of Mamaroneck Sustainability Collaborative. Residents display signs in their yards and gardens to show that they have taken the “Healthy Yards Pledge” to avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides that have a harmful impact on people, pets, pollinators, wildlife, and waterways.

“Healthy Yards, Healthy Bees” airs at 8 p.m. on LMC Media (channel 75 on Optimum, channel 36 on Verizon FIOS or online here).
