Driver Arrested For Felony DWI With 9-Month-Old In Car: Cops

A Bronx woman was charged under Leandra's Law after police say she was driving intoxicated with a baby in her car and got in a wreck.

MAMARONECK, NY — A driver from the Bronx is facing charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, felony DWI and endangering the welfare of a child after a collision in Mamaroneck.

Mamaroneck police responded to a 911 emergency call on June 19, just after 10 p.m., about a reported car accident near Jensen and Keeler Avenues. Officers on scene said they learned that the accident actually happened near Boston Post Road and Barry Avenue.

Speaking with one of the drivers involved in the earlier collision, officers reported seeing signs of alcohol intoxication. Sylvia Cortez was placed under arrest. At the time of the accident, police say the 40-year-old was driving while intoxicated with her 9-month-old child in the car.

The driver was later released without having to post bail, pending a court appearance.

The Bronx woman was charged under Leandra’s Law which allows for felony charges in driving while intoxicated cases in which a child under 15 years of age is in the car at the time.
