On the Westchester shoreline, breaking waves may cause beach erosion and splash-over onto roads and properties, says the NWS.

(National Hurricane Center)

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — With Hurricane Dorian passing by, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory that will be in effect from 5 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday. Also, the NWS warns that breaking waves may result in beach erosion and splash-over onto shoreline roads and properties along the Westchester coast of the Long Island Sound.

  • LOCATIONS...Vulnerable coastal locales in Southern Westchester, Southern Fairfield and Southern New Haven.
  • TIMING...Minor coastal impacts during the times of high tide from 5 PM Friday to 9 PM EDT Saturday.
  • COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Shallow flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Expect around 1 to locally 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. Some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding.
  • SHORELINE IMPACTS...Breaking waves may result in beach erosion and wave splash-over onto shoreline roads and properties along the Westchester shoreline.

The National Weather Service predicts that Dorian will be downgraded to a tropical cyclone as it passes well south and east of the region today and tonight. Rain chances increase today and tonight, due to Dorian and an upper level disturbance that approaches from the west.

With increasing easterly winds and cloudy skies today, temperatures will remain cooler than normal, peaking around 70 degrees.
