Larchmont Library Challenges Community to Read This Summer

Your summer reading could win prizes!

LARCHMONT, NY - The Larchmont Public Library is challenging the community to read this summer. And to make the challenge fun, the library has created three games that library patrons can participate in and thus be eligible to win prizes for their summer reading. Most prizes are donated from local businesses and there is something for everyone, from children to teens and adults. Participants have plenty of reading time as the challenge begins on Friday, June 26, and runs through Friday, August 28.

FOR ADULTS ages 18 and up the theme is: WAR AND REMEMBRANCE

The theme for the adult challenge is WAR AND REMEMBRANCE with the focus on three major wars. The Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War and World War II all ended 200, 150 and 70 years ago respectively. Those wishing to participate should drop by the library to pick up an official Reading Ration Book and official Reading List. Each war is divided into several categories: “On the Front” Fiction and Nonfiction and “The Home Front” Fiction and Nonfiction. Once patrons have read a book from a category, they can come to the Reference Desk at the library to have their Reading Ration Book stamped and to receive a raffle ticket. Participants can earn a maximum of twelve raffle tickets. There are 4 raffle prizes and participants may enter multiple tickets for each prize.

FOR TWEENS AND TEENS Ages 11 through 19 the theme is: UNMASK!

Tweens and Teens can read books, magazines, comics, newspapers, websites—you name it—to win prize tokens. Participating teens can win prizes in two ways. First, teens will earn a token for every four hours of reading. Prizes cost 1, 3 or 6 tokens each (depending on the prize) and include candy, games, autographed books, ear buds and more. Each participant can earn up to 16 prize tokens. Second, teens can read a book that fits into one of four categories: REAL HERO, FICTIONAL HERO, UNMASK YOUR TALENT, and SUPERHERO OR VILLAIN. When teens read a book in one of these categories, the library will punch an official UNMASK! game card and provide a raffle ticket to enter a drawing for one of our awesome prize packages. And teens get a BONUS raffle ticket if they read a book from all four categories! Prizes include two 3-day passes to ComicCon this October in Manhattan, a gift bag from Pink On Palmer, and more!

FOR CHILDREN the theme is: SUIT UP YOUR SUPER DOG!

Kids can win prizes for reading all summer long reading about their favorite super heroes and more! Readers will get a prize for every three hours spent reading, and beginning readers earn prizes for every two hours spent reading. For this part of the game, kids choose what they read and log time spent reading in an online log on the library’s website. If kids seek an extra challenge and the chance to win prizes donated from local stores, they can pick up a SUPERDOG GAME SHEET at the library. Then they read from our lists of approved titles and earn raffle tickets that can then be used to toward a random drawing for prizes.

While most public libraries offer a basic summer reading game, the Larchmont Public Library creates reading challenges that are unique and works closely with local businesses to provide prizes that are highly desirable (wine, gift cards to area restaurants, etc). And all of the library’s reading challenges for the summer are open to anyone with a library card from Westchester County. Prizewinners for all age groups will be selected by random drawing on or about August 31 and participants do not have to be present to win.
