LEGO Club Sees Reduced Turnout Due to Warm Weather

The biweekly event saw a modest attendance due to Friday's gorgeous forecast.

LARCHMONT— With summer fast approaching, children of all ages are starting to head straight for the playground once the bell rings and school is dismissed.

The urge to play outside, combined with summer-like temperatures, left the LEGO Club at the Larchmont Public Library lacking in its usual attendance.

The event, held every other Friday from 3:30-4:30 p.m., allows kids ages 8-11 to gather upstairs in the Children’s Center and create whatever comes to mind using their favorite building blocks, LEGOs.

“It’s nice for them to come in and gather with each other,” said Librarian Darcy Kaye, who coordinates the event. “They sort of just hang out and build.”

However, the Club’s usual crowd of about 15-20 kids saw a significant drop this past Friday, as only three children decided to come by and create a new LEGO project.

“It’s not a sign-up event, so when the weather gets warm they stay outside,” said Kaye

This week’s theme was ‘How to Build a Dog’; yet the children in attendance seemed rather inclined to come up with their own ideas for their creations, a tendency that has become more and more common each time the event is held. As the kids dug into the giant plastic bins full of LEGOs searching for their desired pieces, they began to share their ideas with one another to see who could create the coolest looking robot.

“Like reading, there’s a lot of creativity and thought involved, and that’s great for them,” said Kaye, as the kids snapped their LEGO pieces together.

In terms of future dates, the Library has yet to decide if it will modify its schedule although the weather outside has began to warm up significantly. The Club will continue to meet every other Friday at 3:30, however according to Kaye, things could change once the summer arrives.

“We plan to keep it going, it really provides a spark for the imagination,” Kaye said.

For now, children will still be able to gather in the Library’s activity room and create LEGO projects, which are later displayed on top of bookshelves throughout the Children’s Center.
