Mamaroneck Golf Club To Host 2020 U.S. Open Championship

MAMARONECK, NY — The 2020 U.S. Open Championship will be coming to southern Westchester. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the golf championship will be held at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck from Sept. 14 to Sept. 20.

The championship will be played without fans in attendance.

The United States Golf Association, which runs the championship, will put protocols in place to protect players and staff. The protocols will include testing, cleaning, use of face coverings and social distancing.

Cuomo said the national championship is a great event, and the organizers are working with the state Department of Health to ensure everyone's safety.

"Today's numbers show continued progress," he said, "and our goal now is to protect that progress as states across the nation see their infection rates surge.

"We cannot go backwards, so remember to wear your mask and stay New York Tough," Cuomo said.

The golf association's CEO, Mike Davis, said he was grateful to Cuomo and his team for collaborating on bringing the championship to Mamaroneck.

"While we will miss having fans on-site, we know this is the right decision to make for the players and the community," he said.

Winged Foot Golf Club, which already has a countdown clock to the championship on its website, is located on Fenimore Road in Mamaroneck.

The club was founded in 1921 and hosted its first U.S. Open in 1929. According to the club's website, it has hosted four more USGA National Championships, the 1997 PGA Championship, two Women's Opens, a Senior Open and two U.S. Amateurs and the 2016 U.S. Amateur Four Ball.
