Mamaroneck Mayor Throws Support Behind Petition to Fly Pride Flag

Mayor Tom Murphy issued a statement supporting a call for Mamaroneck to raise the rainbow pride flag above village property.

MAMARONECK, NY — Mayor Tom Murphy issued a statement on Tuesday strongly supporting an online petition calling on the Mamaroneck Village Board of Trustees to vote unanimously to fly the pride flag on municipal property in Mamaroneck during Pride Month in June.

“If I were not a member of the Board of Trustees and this petition were not addressed to me, I would most assuredly sign it,” Murphy wrote. “But you can still sign it! As it stands I will do my best to make sure this becomes a reality.”

Murphy also posted a link to the Change.org petition calling on elected officials to take action in support of LGBTQ+ equality. The online petition was started this month by Mamaroneck resident Lesley Findlay.

“June is Pride Month - a month dedicated to celebrating the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning community, honoring the 1969 Stonewall riots, as well as the achievements in equal justice and equal opportunity for all LGBTQ+ Americans,” the appeal begins. “Please show your commitment to inclusivity of your friends and neighbors by signing this petition asking the Village Board of Trustees to vote unanimously to fly the Pride Flag on Village property for the entire month this year and every year hereafter as an expression of support of equality and inclusion in our community and the world at large.”

“As the interim rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in the village of Mamaroneck, I fully support the flying of the pride flag on village property during the month of June,” Tami Burks wrote after signing the petition.

As of 11:27 a.m on Wednesday, 315 Mamaroneck residents have signed on to the Change.org petition. The stated goal is to reach 500 signatures
