Mamaroneck Police Warn Of Burglar Posing As Con Edison Worker

Cops say a thief posing as a Con Edison or water utility employee has talked his way into local homes attempting to steal valuables.

MAMARONECK, NY —The Mamaroneck Police Department is warning that an imposter posing as a utility worker has recently talked his way into homes in an attempt to steal valuables. In one case, the would-be burglar fled after the homeowner grew suspicious and attempted to call police.

The fake water works employee rang the doorbell and told the victim that he needed to come into the house to check the water pressure, police said. In other cases, the perpetrator is believed to have impersonated a Con Edison Employee needing to enter homes to investigate a nonexistent gas leak.

Police believe the suspect fled in a white crew-cab pickup truck in his latest attempt to rob unsuspecting Mamaroneck residents. An image of the vehicle was caught on a neighborhood Ring doorbell.

Con Edison says that its employees will always display identification. "If someone comes to your home or business claiming to be from Con Edison, ask for identification," the company told customers in a recent fraud alert. "If you are still unsure, call 1-800-75-CONED (26633)."

Police are asking anyone who believes they may have received a suspicious, unannounced visit from suspect utility workers to report the incident to the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department right away at 914-777-7780. Investigators are especially interested in security or cellphone videos of similar incidents in the area.
