May Day Is Spring Cleaning Day In The Village of Mamaroneck
May 1 is the day to get Mamaroneck spic-and-span just in time for summer. Volunteers will pick up litter at a dozen locations around town.
MAMARONECK, NY — Village residents won’t be slowing down now that Earth Day is behind us. Caring for the local environment will continue in full force with Mamaroneck’s annual Clean and Green Day on May 1.
Volunteers will choose one or more of a dozen public areas in town to pick up litter and beautify neighborhoods. While the clean-up day is sure to be a lot of work, there will be some fun to be had as well.
Opening remarks at the Marine Education Center at Harbor Island Park will be followed with a raffle and giveaways from local merchants will start at 9:30 a.m. Cornell University Press will give away a limited number of copies of "Wildflowers of New York" by Andrew Garn.

Although a copy of "Wildflowers of New York" might be nice to take home to display on the coffee table, free dirt might be an equally useful offering at the Clean and Green Day.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) will hand out free garden compost soil to volunteers while supplies last. There will be a DPW truck parked near the Marine Education Center. Residents will need to bring a 32-gallon receptacle to claim their free dirt. Limit one container per household. Proof of residency may be required.
Members of the Committee for the Environment will also be on hand to sell food-waste recycling kits. The $20 kits include a 2-gallon counter-top pail, larger 6-gallon carry tote and 25 compostable bag liners for the pail.
