The manager said he's looking forward to the day they can greet customers with a smile that is not under a mask.

MAMARONECK, NY — North Shore Farms opened its ninth location and its first store to Westchester County two weeks ago. The new store location is the site of the former A&P on Mamaroneck Avenue.

The A&P closed in 2015, and the building was split into a space now occupied by CVS Pharmacy, leaving the rest for North Shore Farms.

Its lease was signed in 2018, with an opening tentatively set for sometime in 2019. That didn't quite work and then there was a global pandemic.

On opening day, June 26, the locally hired North Shore Farms team placed the finishing touches on the store's aisles and opened the doors at 9 a.m. to a line that was appropriately spaced for the current public health climate.

Employees welcomed and cheered for the new customers as they entered, the first 10 of which received $25 North Shore Farms gift cards.

Community leaders gathered — also keeping social distancing in mind — to celebrate the opening of North Shore Farms’ new store location, including Shari Ascher, advocacy and community liaison to County Executive George Latimer, state Senator Shelley Mayer, Mamaroneck Village Mayor Tom Murphy and other local officials.

“We’re excited to bring North Shore Farms to Mamaroneck and to Westchester County,” said George Tsiatis, a spokesperson for the company. “We are thrilled to join such a welcoming and vibrant community, and we look forward to serving them now and in the future.”

Opening during a health crisis wasn't exactly in the store's game plan, but open they did, with health protocols in place to ensure the safety of staff and customers alike.

Jimmy Mamais, the store's manager, said it was definitely a different experience.

"It's less of a celebration and more of getting to work on serving the community in a safe way," he said.

"We're excited to be here in Mamaroneck, and are looking forward to the day when we can safely greet customers with a smile, instead of with a smile under a mask," Mamais said.

The new Mamaroneck store, at 817 Mamaroneck Avenue, is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
