1st Safe Boating Course In Honor of Brianna's Law
United States Coast Guard Flotilla 0104 Takes the lead to keep Lindy Residents in compliance with the new January 2020 Safety Laws
On January 18, the first Safe Boating Course of the year since Brianna's Law came into effect was offered by the United States Coast Guard Aux. Flotilla 0104 at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center. Lindy residents young and old came together and were honored to receive a visit from Gina Costa Lieneck, the Long Island mom responsible for helping to make our waterways safer. Gina and her family were victims of a tragic boating accident 14 years ago and she worked to bring awareness to the need for more education for boaters and small craft operators. The new laws take effect January 1, 2020 and a safety certificate is a requirement for youth operating motorized watercraft as early as this year. The rules are designed to help reduce the amount of preventable incidents on the water. A 2nd chance to take the course before the start of this year's boating season will be offered at the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, check the local bulletin for information. More information can be found on the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle Website and the NYS Parks websites. Sincere thanks to the men and women of Flotilla 0104 for making this serious course, fun, informative and interesting! Special thank you to Mayor Mike Lavorata and Joan Masterson, Lindenhurst Village Trustee for providing the classroom at the Rainbow Center. The only thing more tragic than an untimely death is a preventable one. Knowledge is Power! Lindy Cares! Honorable Mention Flotilla Trainers: Commander JoEllen Koestner-Krut, Hans Kuenstler, Gary Lerner, Rick Cohen, James Luisi, Frank Porstner, Joan Masterson and George Duguid.
