Bathing Advisory Issued At 63 Suffolk Beaches

Due to the heavy rainfall, officials are advising residents to avoid bathing at several local beaches. Check out the full list below.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY - The Department of Health announced that due to the heavy rainfall, an advisory has been issued against bathing at 63 Suffolk beaches.

The advisory is based on the presence of bacteria in these areas at levels that are above New York State standards.

The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries and because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing.

The department recommends that residents avoid bathing and contact with the water in affected areas for at least a 24-hour period.

This advisory will be lifted Saturday morning unless sampling conducted by the department reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period.

The Centerport Yacht Club and Valley Grove Beach in the Town of Huntington, though included in this advisory, were closed on May 29, 2019, and will remain closed until further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
