Books Donated to Lindenhurst Students
Thanks to a million-book donation made by Scholastic, the Lindenhurst School District receives 500 new books for Harding students.
Since Hurricane Sandy hit on October 29, the Lindenhurst School District has been receiving aid from inside and outside the community to help students displaced by the superstorm reclaim some normalcy and provide them with some of the learning tools they lost during the storm.
The outpouring of help from people in the community, as well as strangers from other communities, has been truly heartwarming. People donated clothing, food, water, toys and thousands of books.
Harding Avenue Elementary School reading specialist Maria Bohrer realized children needed books to replace those lost in their own personal libraries.
So, along with her daughter, Daniel Street Elementary School teacher Erica Bohrer, and fellow Harding teacher Caitlyn Curran, she spread the word Lindenhurst students needed new and gently used books.
“Students throughout the District were elated to receive so many wonderful books,” said Maria Bohrer.
“In Lindenhurst houses are being rebuilt, families are moving back and children are reading," she said.
Thanks to a million-book donation made by Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, to schools and libraries affected by the storm, the District is set to receive 500 new books for Harding students.
More than 100 schools across the area affected by the storm applied for grants from Scholastic and are set to receive similar donations.
“We look forward to introducing these books into our classrooms and continuing to reach a sense of normalcy in the daily schedule,” said Harding Principal Brian Chamberlin.
