Fourteen Town of Babylon high school seniors were awarded college scholarships by Covanta Energy - the company that owns and operates The Babylon Resource Recovery Facility in West Babylon - on May 4 at Babylon Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst.

The celebration - held during the Town's Annual Earth Day Celebration -  awarded more than $3,300 in scholarships to help the college-bound seniors pay for their higher education.

All of the students honored had completed environmentally related science projects, earning them their awards.

Kevin White, a North Babylon High School senior, was given the top prize for his work on using greenhouse gases to boost the use of hydrogen energy, earning him a $1,000 scholarship.

Students from other Town school districts, including Babylon, Copiague, Deer Park, North Babylon and Lindenhurst, were also honored during the ceremony.

Among them was seventh-place winner Blake Waszmer of Lindenhurst School District, who won $125 for his project Got Filtration?

"We're particularly proud of the Covantage EcoTech program as it serves as a great incentive for our kids to give thought and practice about how they can have a more positive impact in making their environment both cleaner and greener," said Jeff George, Covanta Babylon business manager.

"We had a fantastic range of projects this year which always makes for a difficult task in choosing the top awards - in our minds, they're all winners!"

On hand for the ceremony were Town officials, including Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Suffolk Legislature DPO Wayne Horsley, along with Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Town Clerk Carol Quirk.
