Police are searching for three men who, they said, robbed a Copiague jewelry store in early March. Two men entered Hands of Gold, located at 494 Oak Street, around 12 p.m. on March 7, and inquired about gold, police said.

They then allegedly displayed handguns and took jewelry from behind the counter. During the robbery, a third suspect, who was wearing a mask, entered, and the three suspects then exited with assorted jewelry, police said.

The first suspect was described as in his mid- to late 20s, six feet tall, with a medium build. He was clean-shaven and had short curly black hair. The second suspect was described as approximately 35 years old, five-foot-seven to five-foot-nine with a medium build and short curly black hair. The third suspect was wearing a leather jacket, hooded sweatshirt and a light-colored mask over his face.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

Babylon FD Knocks Down Robert Street Fire
The Babylon Fire Department quickly responded to a house fire at 44 Robert Street on Sunday afternoon, knocking down the fire after it damaged the Southern portion of the home.

A dispatch went out at around 12:05 p.m. after flames and heavy black smoke was reported from the single-story ranch at 44 Robert Street. The BFD  responded to the scene, bringing the fire under control by 12:30 p.m. and continued to work on the scene, knocking the remaining bits down.

Babylon Fire Chief Paul Twardy said there were no injuries on the scene from either residents or firefighters.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation shortly, Twardy noted.

The house fire was the second seen this month in the Village, the last claiming a home on Kittiwake Lane on March 7.


Suffolk County Police and Crime Stoppers are seeking the public’s help in finding a man and a woman who used a credit card stolen from a home in West Islip.

According to police, on March 11 an unknown person illegally entered a residence on Tanglewood Road in West Islip and stole jewelry and a credit card. The homeowner later learned the credit card was used to make several unauthorized purchases at several stores in Huntington Station.

Police said the suspects were caught on surveillance video purchasing more than $1,300 worth of clothing with the victim’s credit card at the True Religion store at the Walt Whitman Mall, located at 160 Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station.

Authorities described one suspect as a white male with a stocky build. He was wearing black pants, a white shirt, a light-colored jacket, white shoes and a cap on his head. The other suspect is described as a white female with a thin build and long dark hair that was pulled back from her face. She was wearing a black-and-white shirt under a black vest, and blue jeans with dark boots.

District Alerts Residents of Sex Offender in West Islip
Legal Notice: Anyone who uses this information to injure, harass, or commit a criminal act against any person may be subject to criminal prosecution.

The West Islip School District posted a message on its website alerting parents  within the district about a level two sex offender who's moved into the area.

Chris Cook, whose level two status means he's a moderate risk to repeat a sex offense, resides on Martin Drive, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services website.

The District sends out alerts regarding registered sex offenders in the area, which includes addresses where available and the level of their offense. 

As of Monday, the state registry lists three offenders living in West Islip, some of whom have aliases:

  • Chris Cook/Christopher Cook, level two, living on Martin Drive
  • Albert Merrifield, level two, living on Myrtle Avenue
  • John Van Detti/John Vandetti, level three, living on Myrtle Avenue
