Lindenhurst Locals: Rolling Stone Crossed the Line

Several stores are refusing to carry the latest issue featuring bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The cover of the latest Rolling Stone features Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. It's not a grainy image from a surveillance camera or a mug shot but it shows a hip-looking young man, his mussy hair and goatee making him seem more like one of the rock stars the music magazine frequently covers rather than possibly the most hated man in the United States right now. A suspected terrorist. The cover photo supports the investigative piece inside outlining what made the boy turn into a killer.

But since the cover was announced to the public there has been a backlash. Several stores, including Stop & Shop, CVS and Walgreen's, have refused to carry the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine because of its decision to put Tsarnaev on the cover.

We posed the question on our Facebook page and asked readers if they agreed with the retailers' decision. Here is what a few of your neighbors are saying:

Mary Lou Taylor Goosney: If they wanted to do a story about him, fine, but put a picture of the 8 yr old that he killed on the cover.

Donna Sowul: smh,.....making a killer a rock star...invites copycats....booo!!! I respect and admire the stores that refuse to carry this issue!

Mi Chele: I think that terrorists should not be glorified. It sends the wrong message. It is a slap in the face to those who lost their lives. Shame on rolling stone. They should show their solidarity with those suffering.

Tom Daniels: Freedom of the press gives them the right to publish this, my freedom of choice says I will not buy it

Ellen Burkholder Conti: I agree. if they wanted to do a story about the bombing there are hundreds of other photos they could have used. There's no need to glorify a terrorist!

Valerie Jack Conlin: I agree...it is a disgrace to sensationalize a murderer on the front cover of any publication, as if he's someone special...

Frank Willis: I agree that he should not be glorified with a cover especially since he is not a celebrity/musician. The real test is to see how we as a society react to the next issue regardless of the cover. We should never support this behavior with a cover because in my opinion, this will only encourage others to do similar acts to hopefully get on the cover of a magazine. Obviously Rolling Stone did this to sell magazines, our responsibility is not to purchase this magazine or support stores that carry it. Unless Rolling Stone somehow apologizes or dedicates the next issue to the victims of this tragedy as a way to somehow redeem themselves, we should discontinue supporting this magazine or any store that carries it.

Jennifer Lynn Millar: Rolling Stone should stick to the glorification of musicians not terrorists. An article within the magazine is one thing but to put the bomber on the cover was a bad move on their part. I have a life long subscription to RS and over the years they have certainly lost their musical momentum.

Sheila Muldoon Rybak: I stopped subscribing to Rolling Stone long ago as they were becoming more political, driven by the advertisers, and had so little to do about our beloved rockers and the music. To be on the cover of the Rolling Stone meant the musician(s) made it, that they deserved our attention (and our money). This piece of slime should NOT be on such a (no longer) revered cover. Long live rock and roll, with or without The Rolling Stone. Shame!

Rose Gerbino Marley: I agree completely, I have no problem with them writing a story about how he became the monster that he is today but that picture of him on the cover is ridiculous, they could have chose to put his victims on the cover.

Edward A.Gross: Good. Every store should do the same

Joan Stasio Murphy: Absolutely agree not to sell! He's a terrorist NOT a celebrity!!!!!

Kyle Markowitz: That's wrong. What happen to our freedom of speech???

Karen Bible Catone: @Kyle of course, they are entitled to their freedom of speech just as we are entitled to speak against their choice. We also have a choice as not to reward their (in our opinion) BAD CHOICE by not rewarding them with our dollars by not buying their magazine,

Angela Vanleuvan Simpson: Rolling Stone should give the proceeds of all the magazines to the victims and set up an account to those who lost their parents that day towards collage! yes they made a mistake by putting this man on the cover but what is done is done now it is time to due good with it and use the money where it will go to the most good! not in their pockets but the widows and kids of that what was to be a wonderful family day turned to a day families will have to try to heal from for days and maybe years from because of one man and his brother! rolling stone do the right thing!

Ilene Meister: Definitely ,don't sell it. He killed people

Paul Schmidt: Bravo! It's about time people stop celebrating a**holes. As far rolling stone mag, they haven't been relevant in a decade. Let that ship sink.

Debbie Parthe-Baron: Absolutely

Marilyn Bradburn: Totally agree. No publicity!!!!

Robert Lee: The magazine has every right to put whatever picture they want on their magazine. Hitler was Time's Man of the Year in 1938 amd Stalin in '39 amd '42... You want to blame someone for glorifying the terrorist suspects blame the media. They are the ones who plastered his pictures 100x more than a magazine. We live in a connected world. Did anyone read the article about him in the magazine? Maybe the way he is portrayed on the cover expresses the message. How an innocent enough looking person is capable of such atrocities? We live in a free society and the free market lets us choose to support or not support something of we like it or not.
