Raising Homes in Sandy-Damaged Areas of LI
Daniel Horn recently posted about the raising of homes in Lindenhurst and other coastal communities in a post-Hurricane Sandy world.
"Right after Superstorm Sandy hit the area, a group of us started a committee called Operation Resilient Long Island (ORLI). The committee exists as a collaborative response to Sandy, founded to explore and develop methods to aid local communities by finding long-term resilient building and design solutions," wrote Horn, who's from Lindenhurst and an architecture student at NYIT.

"We feel the best way we can help is by organizing and hosting a global design ideas competition which will focus on the effect raising home elevations will have on coastal communities," he continued. "Details can be found at our website at www.3Ccompetition.org."
Lindenhurst Sold Homes Report for Feb. 2013
Jackie Connelly-Fornuff recently posted the latest sold homes report for Lindy.
"Mortgage rates are slowly going up, as well. Between supply and demand, along with mortgage rates going up, this'll drive housing prices to increase. We're not there yet, but will be sooner rather than later," wrote Connelly-Fornuff, who's an agent with Century 21 AA Realty.
She went on to describe the sold homes for the month of February this year - and list how many homes in Lindy there are currently on the market.
Info about House Plants and Your Home's Indoor Air Quality
Robert Deacon recently posted some information about how house plants could have a positive effect on a home's indoor air quality.
"Household plants may or may not impact our air quality, but what will is, when whether permits, opening your windows and doors to bring fresh air in, venting out stovetop cooking and, when using cleaning supplies, trying to use more of a green product with low volatile organic compounds* (VOCs). As for those plants that may help, we say why not? They look great anyway," wrote Deacon, who owns Vango Cleaning.
IRS Tax Tips for Busy New Yorkers
IRS blogger Dianne Besunder recently posted last-minute tips for New York taxpayers.
"More than 63,000 New Yorkers who failed to file an income tax return for 2009 are missing out on approximately $65 million in unclaimed refunds. To collect the money they must file their 2009 returns with the IRS no later than April 15, 2013," Besunder wrote.
"When a return isn't filed, the law provides taxpayers with just a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund. Half of those who could claim refunds would receive more than $620. IRS forms and publications are available on the IRS website, www.irs.gov," she added.
