Lindy Cares Leadership Career Day at Cohen's

Lindy Cares students attended a conference on March 19th at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center as guests of Michelle Raider, a Lindy resident who also serves as the Coordinator of Program & Community Outreach for Northwell Health. Students heard presentations from Dr. Monica Shekar-Kapoor & Sandeep Kapoor about the implementation of SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) a process that is utilized in Northwell’s Trauma Centers and Hospitals to identify at risk individuals and help change the dialogue around substance abuse in order to provide a higher quality of treatment and care. Students received instruction about life saving techniques for first aid that could save someone in a life-threatening situation. Resume writing skills and tips were provided including information about volunteer opportunities and internships, rounding out a day of learning and personal growth. A special surprise included a presentation from a Lindy 2005 Alum, Shawna Vernisie who talked about a career in Music and Art Therapy. A new collaboration with the Outreach team at Northwell promises to bring new tools and resources to our students as they navigate their academic careers. Partnering with the health sector also means that our students will have access to the most up to date information about current trends that will keep them knowledgeable and empowered to make choices insuring healthier lifestyles.

Dates to Remember: Lindy Cares next general meeting will be held at Hurricane’s on Montauk Highway on March 26that 6:30. Our Annual Spirit of the Community Meeting will take place on April 18that 6:30 in the High School Cafeteria. All speakers are encouraged to RSVP to lindycareslcc@gmail.com.
