Created in 2007 as part of the agency's 40th anniversary celebrations, the award program is named for a former Nassau BOCES Board president, who served from 1971 to 2009.

Since then each year the BOCES award is given to students in the program not only for their academic achivements, but who also exhibit perseverance, enthusiasm and willingness to help others.

After receiving the letter Nathan said he "wanted people to know about Taylor."
