Lindy Student Wins Scholarship

Efrain Laguna of Lindenhurst High School attends the 2019 Moose International Youth Awareness Congress

Two years ago Mr. Kropp of the Local Loyal Order of Moose Lodge in Lindenhurst asked Lindy Cares to collaborate with his organization. After the initial introduction Lindy Cares and the Moose encouraged students to work together to serve as role models for younger students by participating in "Moose Talks". Dedicated Moose volunteers served the students lunch and hosted a training on site at the lodge. One Lindy student, Efrain Laguna now a senior at Lindenhurst High School, accepted the challenge and in 2017 and created presentations about environmental responsibility/proper and safe disposal of unwanted medications as a way of demonstrating good citizenship and delivered this interactive musical presentation in collaboration with local Girl and Boy Scout troop leaders. In 2018-2019 Efrain created a new presentation to help students hone their decision making skills, talk about how to use good judgement/critical thinking skills and the importance of taking responsibility for their actions. After meeting with several girl scout troops to reach students age 9-12 and submitting his application for the International Congress, Efrain was selected to represent New York State through our local lodge at the 2019 Moose International Youth Awareness Congress. Efrain placed 4th in the competition. This honor is also accompanied by a $3,000.00 college scholarship. Finding ways for students to take full advantage of local, county and national resources is a high priority for Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition. Helping students reach their fullest potential and supporting them as they expand their learning experiences is one of the ways Lindy Cares members seek to create an environment that lets our youth thrive. Congratulation Efrain and thanks to the Moose members and Scout leaders who made this collaboration possible.
