The National Weather Service warned that damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Strong winds of up to 70 mph could whip Long Island on Monday, with weather forecasters warning of possible downed trees and power lines that could lead to widespread power outages. Heavy rain is also expected to pour on the island Monday morning, with thunderstorms possible. Showers could last through Monday night.

Gusts of up to 70 mph are also possible, the agency said. The alert also applied to parts of Connecticut.
