More Than 2,000 Power Outages On Long Island As High Wind Warning Expires

Thousands of Long Islanders are without power as strong winds lash the region. A tree has also crashed through a home.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: The high wind warning has expired. As of 6 p.m., 2,249 PSEG customers are without power.

A high-wind warning is back in effect for Long Island until 6 p.m. Monday. The warning had been downgraded to an advisory, but wind gusts are once again expected to reach 60 mph on the island.

The strongest winds will occur through the late afternoon, and they may blow down trees and power lines. As of 4:30 p.m., PSEG Long Island is reporting that 5,061 of its customers have lost power. See the PSEG outage map here. To report an outage, call 1-800-490-0075.

A Glen Cove resident just missed getting crushed by a large tree that fell onto her home and caused significant damage Monday morning. A wind gust of 56 mph was recorded in the Long Island Sound a couple miles off the Glen Cove coast just minutes before the tree fell.

Westbound Sunrise Highway in Massapequa is shut down as of 4:50 p.m. because of downed trees and wires.
