Obituary: ​Wilbur A. Sterling, WWII Veteran, Dies At 98

The ex-chief of the Amityville Fire Department passed away on Monday, May 14.

Wilbur A. Sterling, of Amityville, died on Monday, May 14. He was 98.

Sterling was a proud Naval veteran serving during World War II. He also served as the former Deputy Chief Fire Marshall of Suffolk County for 20 years and Chief of the Amityville Fire Department serving from 1965 to 1967.

He was predeceased by both wives Kathryn Sterling and Shirley L. Sterling. Sterling was also predeceased by his children Wayne Sterling and Janet L. Fine (Andrew).

He is survived by his granddaughter, Kaydie Fine, as well as his close friend, Regina Coons.

Visitation was held Wednesday at the Powell Funeral Home in Amityville.

Services were held at the Amityville Masonic Lodge #977, the Wantagh American Legion Post #1273 and the Amityville Fire Department.

Internment with military honors will be held on Tuesday, May 22 starting at 11 a.m. at the L.I. National Cemetery in East Farmingdale.
