Photo: Alleghany Student Raises Money, Gives out Smiles

Daniel Dominquez along with his fellow Alleghany Avenue Elementary School third-grade students raises money for Operation Smile.

Third-grade student Daniel Dominquez from Alleghany Avenue Elementary School recently made a difference for a child a world away.

He read about an Ethiopian child named Solomon, who had a cleft lip and, because of this, was teased by other children.

Wanting to help, Dominquez with his mother’s help, raised money for Solomon so his cleft lip could be corrected. Solomon’s surgery was successful. Dominquez shared Solomon’s story with his fellow classmates in Elise Tilden’s class.

Together the class raised $75, and Mrs. Tilden matched their efforts with another $75, for a grand total of $150.

The money collected was sent to Operation Smile for future cleft lip operations.

Dominquez now corresponds with Solomon through an interpreter and shared his story with the students and staff at Alleghany.

His efforts and those of students in Mrs. Tilden’s class are just one example of the many positive outreach initiatives spearheaded by Alleghany students, said school officials.

Thanks to the many programs at the school focusing on Social Emotional Learning and bully prevention efforts, students have learned the importance of doing good deeds outside of school, school officials added.

“At Alleghany there are many discussions about simply doing kind things for others,” said Principal Laura Newman.

“Daniel is a true role model and a terrific child,” she said.
