Rall Students Collect Food for the Hungry
The Lindenhurst elementary school collected food donations that were given to Island Harvest to aid in the non-profit organization's efforts to help the hungry.
Island Harvest and William Rall Elementary School recently teamed collect food for those in need.
Island Harvest representatives visited the Lindenhurst elementary school to inform students about Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization.
Attorney and volunteer Lee Heit spoke to students about the background of the organization, what truly being hungry means and how Island Harvest helps thousands of Long Islanders each day.
“There are studies that say if you eat well before a test, then you'll concentrate better,” said Heit.
She provided relevant statistics to the students, including the fact that one out of 10 people on Long Island are hungry, that there are 210,000 children on Long Island who go to bed hungry every night and that Island Harvest distributed more than two million tons of food after Hurricane Sandy.
Fourth-grade teacher Noreen Greenman, also an Island Harvest representative, launched a school-wide campaign with the help of her students to collect items for Island Harvest.
The school collected donations, including water, healthy snack bars, peanut butter, soup, pasta, beans, rice, cereal, crackers and tuna fish, that were given to Island Harvest to aid in the non-profit organization's efforts to help the hungry.
