Roy Fries, 51-Year Member of the N. Lindenhurst Fire Department, Dies at 71

Fries educated thousands of local children about fire safety.

Roy R. Fries, an active member of the North Lindenhurst Fire Department for more than five decades and a former chief, died on Wednesday at the age of 71.

Fries joined the fire department on May 13, 1963. He served three stints as chief (1973-75, 1986-88 and 1993-96). He was also the president of the department from 2002-04 and 2008-10, as well as president of the Town of Babylon Chiefs Association from 1986-88. In 1975, he was named Fireman of the Year for saving the life of Joseph Felicio.

Fries also served as chairman of the FIre Prevention committee, a position he held for many years, educating over 1,500 children a year in fire safety.

In September 2009, Fries organized the EMS program, which provides emergency medical service to the North Lindenhurst community.

A wake will be held for Fries at the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, located at 1630 Straight Path, next Monday, Dec. 8 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9:30 p.m. Firematic services will take place at 7 p.m. Fries will be buried at Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn in Farmingdale.
