Long Island Weather: Severe Thunderstorm Watch In Effect; More Than 5,000 Power Outages

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. for the entire island, the National Weather Service says.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea size hail are possible. A flash flood watch is in effect in Nassau County until 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to linger into the early morning hours Tuesday. The rain should end by sunrise.

The full forecast:

Monday Night- Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 4am. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Low around 68. Breezy, with a south wind 19 to 24 mph decreasing to 11 to 16 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Tuesday- A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 11 to 14 mph.

Tuesday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 67. Southwest wind 7 to 15 mph.

Wednesday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph.

Wednesday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 62. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph.
