Tanner Park Beach Closed To Bathing Due To Excess Bacteria
The local beach is closed to bathing as of Friday due to the discovery of high levels of bacteria in the water.
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A Copiague beach has closed to bathing on Friday due to the discovery of high levels of bacteria in the water, the Suffolk County Health Department announced.
Tanner Park Beach was shut down to bathing and in addition, Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore, which was closed to bathing earlier this week, remains closed to bathing. According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels. For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours.
