Bristal All-Stars Play Annual All-Star Game

The game was played in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Bucky Dent's Fenway Park homerun and the Yankees 1978 comeback season.

The Bristal Assisted Living sponsored the 13th annual Bristal All-Star Game, honoring players from the New York Senior Softball Association for their dedication and love of the game.

The Bristal All-Stars, softball players in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s who play two doubleheaders a week in the New York Senior Softball Association (NYSSA) held their annual All-Star game at Field “A” at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, to celebrate the 40thth anniversary of Bucky Dent’s Fenway Park Homerun, which defeated Boston in the 163rd game of the season and culminated with the 1978 World Series win over the Dodgers. History did not repeat itself as The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 14-5. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran threw out the first pitch.
1978 was one of the most emotionally charged and controversial seasons in Yankees history.

  • The Yankees were 14 games out of first in mid-July.
  • Billy Martin was forced to resign on July 24th as Yankees Manager after calling Reggie Jackson a born liar and George Steinbrenner a convicted liar.
  • At Old-Timer’s day, on July 29th the Yankees announced that Billy Martin would return as manager in 1980.
  • The Yankees won 53 of their final 74 games and forced a one game playoff against the Red Sox, as both teams finished the regular season 99-63. The Red Sox won the coin toss so the game was played at Fenway Park in Boston.
  • On October 2nd the Yankees beat Boston 3-2 as Bucky Dent hit a three homer off of former Yankee Mike Torrez to cap an incredible come back season.
  • The Yankees beat Kansas City in four games to win the AL pennant.
  • After losing the first two games of the World Series, the Yankees beat the Dodgers in six games.
