LONG BEACH, NY — The Codfish Cowboy graduated to a new Long Beach space this week. On Monday, the gift store that sells independently-made retail goods, had a grand opening ceremony at a new location: 162 East Park Ave.

Angela Skudin is the owner of The Codfish Cowboy and she tells Patch that the move was welcome after five years at the store's original location.

"It was a total blessing and now I have a beautiful new store that is three times the size."

Skudin is an Oklahoma native who moved to Long Beach 18 years ago. She prides herself on carefully choosing and curating what's for sale in her store.

"Items must come from independent artists or makers. We have a heavy focus on women-owned, minority-owned, social good. We like to give back wherever and however possible."

Skudin tries to include as many local goods as possible, but the shop features items from around the world. She told Patch that with the new space, she plans to add activities like book signings, yoga classes and workshops with goods makers. The shop is animal-friendly, with birds and a fish tank, and dogs are always welcome.

Skudin says she is always looking for new vendors, and enjoys helping those starting out.

"Literally anyone can have a small business. I'm living proof of that. I have zero formal education in this industry yet my business is thriving even during a pandemic. I want anyone who wants to to find success with their own two hands."
