Long Beach Cancels First Day Of School Due To Flooding
The district was forced to push back the first day of class because buses and teachers couldn't navigate the roads.

LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach's first day of school was cancelled today after heavy rains caused flooding across the Barrier Island.
The heavy rains caused flooding, which stranded many vehicles, including the district's buses, superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher said in a notice to parents. Buses were unable to get down local roads to pick up students for class. Teachers and staff were also unable to get to school buildings due to the flooding.
Gallagher said that some middle and high school students made it to school before the buildings were closed. Those students are being watched by administrators and will be sent home on buses once the roads clear.
