LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach police arrested a man who they say tried to flee officers in a stolen car, and then on a bicycle.

According to police, Officer Christopher Baldeo was on traffic enforcement duty around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday when his car's license plate reader identified a stolen car. Police say Baldeo pulled the car over at the intersection of National Boulevard and West Market Street. As he got out of his car and approached the stolen car, police say the driver — 30-year-old Joseph A. Minnieer, of Island Park — sped off.

Multiple Long Beach police officers began canvassing the area, and called in assistance from the Nassau County Police Department's Aviation Unit. The stolen car was found abandoned on the 700 block of West Chester Street, police said. Minnieer was found fleeing the area east on West Back Drive on a bicycle.
