Long Island Man Parks Plane in Driveway to Avoid Airport Fees

Neighbors and government officials don't approve of the move, but the owner believes it's no worse than keeping a boat in the driveway.

An Oceanside man is in trouble with his neighbors and the local government after he parked a plane in his driveway to avoid paying airport fees, according to multiple reports.

Harold Guretsky, 69, brought his Cessna to his Yale Street home from Republic Airport about a month ago, according to the New York Post. Guretsky, the owner of a Queens aircraft-radio company, lost his student-pilot license over health issues and wanted to avoid the $150 monthly storage fee, according to the report.

“I didn’t want to keep paying if I couldn’t fly, so I moved it to my driveway,” he reportedly said.

Guretsky’s decision brought on the wrath of the Town of Hempstead, which served him a summons that could set him back $2,500, according to Fox.

“My neighbors are crucifying me,” Guretzky said, according to Fox 5 News, adding, “People have their boats in their driveway.”

One neighbor agreed, according to New York Post, saying, “It doesn’t look good...But a boat in the driveway is just as much of an eyesore.’’

While Guretsky keeps kids away using a PA system, he said he would be open to allowing field trips from schools to visit the plane, according to Fox.
