Soul to the Sea
The people on our Long Beach boardwalk are much like the ships offshore, each taking different routes to get here.

Ships we see offshore, in the New York bight, traverse shipping lanes across the globe. They pass each other, sometimes, as Longfellow said, “...with a look and a voice, in the night, then move on….”
We, on our boardwalk, also move along, passing one another, often with nary a thought.
Sometimes it’s worth it to inquire about another's activities, just a chat and a query. Sometimes people have fascinating stories to tell about their life’s journey. Sometimes it’s good for them to tell them. Sometimes it’s good for us to hear them. Often, we can learn from each other.

I came upon two people while biking our boards with such stories, one of whom I wrote about not long ago and followed up with just now. The other is a man who had a different story to tell. A story I found fascinating, a story of gain and loss, of triumph and bad mistakes. But also a tale of a stormy life, the likes of which most of us did not have to endure. A life that would have taken many of us dawn to utter hopelessness.
This man has very little, but he still has hope, he also has a story. And here it is:
