With nearly 1.2 million illnesses every year, Salmonella is unfortunately common. Salmonella is usually transmitted during warmer months and is often food borne.

According to Salmonella lawyer Jory Lange, “Salmonella causes far more illnesses than you might suspect. For every person with a Salmonella illness confirmed by a laboratory test, there are about 30 more people with Salmonella illnesses that are not reported. Most people who get food poisoning do not go to a doctor or submit a sample to a laboratory, so we never learn what germ made them sick.”

In recent Salmonella news, Long Beach, NY restaurant Brixx & Barley has been shut down temporarily after more than a dozen patrons reported Salmonella food poisoning after eating or drinking at the establishment.

The Nassau County Department of Health stated the restaurant “will not be allowed to reopen until the source of the salmonella is identified,” adding “that could take some time.” While it’s not known if the source of contamination is from the restaurant, the restaurant will be closed while the investigation is active.

Salmonella symptoms vary, but most people with a Salmonella infection experience diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and/or a headache. Symptoms can start as early as 6 hours after infection or up to 4 days, and last 4 to 7 days. Serious symptoms include bloody stools, prolonged diarrhea, fever higher than 102°F, severe dehydration.
