Town Of Hempstead To Dredge Boating Area Off Point Lookout

POINT LOOKOUT, NY —It's a major step forward to protect a navigational hazard for boaters.

Sea Dog Creek, located off the coast of Point Lookout, just north of the Loop Parkway, is a highly traveled waterway that connects boaters from Lido to Jones Inlet.

The Town of Hempstead announced that it received a permit from the state's Department of Environmental Conservation to allow dredging of the waterway.

Due to an existing shoal and depth conditions as low as three feet during low tide in portions of the Sea Dog Creek, dredging is a critical need for the channel, the Town of Hempstead said in a statement.

"Gaining the DEC’s blessing to dredge at Sea Dog Creek provides the Town of Hempstead the opportunity to improve a waterway that is a key transportation hub for commercial and recreational boaters," Clavin said in a statement. "These upgrades are necessary to prevent accidents and promote safer conditions for boaters."

Experts predict that the channel would need about 80,000 yards of sand dredged to make the channel safer for boats to navigate, particularly during low tide, the town said in the statement.

"This area is in dire need of dredging," Councilman Chris Carini said in a statement. "By obtaining this permit from the NYSDEC, this signifies important progress toward making our waterways safer for all boaters."
