UPDATED: Vehicle Strikes Man In West End

A pedestrian was seriously injured after a vehicle struck him on a West End street early Sunday morning.

A male in his late 20's appeared to have suffered two broken legs after a a car hit him on West Beech Street during the 1 a.m. hour Sept. 8, Scott Kemins, commissioner of the Long Beach Fire Department, told Patch on Sunday.

A LBFD ambulance transported the injured pedestrian to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

The pedestrian was crossing the north end of the street to the south end, in the area of 947 W. Beech, when a 2004 Mercury Marquis struck him, Eric Cregeen, a spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department, told Patch on Monday. Cregeen said the vehicle operated as a taxi owned by the Beech Street Taxi company, at 966 W. Beech St. in Long Beach.

“The vehicle sustained a fractured windshield on the passenger side of the glass,” he said. “The pedestrian was lying unconscious in the roadway upon police arrival.”

A woman who lives near the accident scene told Patch that she was sleeping when she heard a loud noise that woke her at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday. She looked outside and saw a man lying face down on West Beech near Tennessee Avenue, and soon after people surrounded him while others diverted traffic away from the scene. She called police.
