LONG BEACH, NY — Firefighters and police officers from multiple departments rescued a family stranded in the Reynolds Channel on Sunday.
According to the Long Beach Fire Department, a call came in around 2:20 p.m. for a swimmer in distress in the water of Reynolds Channel, north of Lindell Boulevard. Arriving firefighters found three children and their parents clinging to a buoy, kayak and paddle board in the bay. They were unable to make it to shore because of a strong current. The family was out on the water in two kayaks and three paddle boards.
The Long Beach Fire Department called in a police helicopter for assistance. The LBFD's jet ski and rescue swimmer team were the first to arrive and rescued two children. A few moments later, the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department's rescue boat arrived and the crew pulled the other three out of the water.
