Clinton Supermarket Closing After a Decade on Lower East Side
Clinton Supermarket & Mall served as a "lifeblood for locals" for over 10 years. Its landlord now wants a new tenant to pay $24K/month rent.
LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — The mostly-Asian grocery Clinton Supermarket & Mall hit the market last week after over a decade of service on the Lower East Side, Bowery Boogie reports. A real estate listing on Craigslist asks for $24,000 per month for the 90 Clinton St. location.
"Another lifeblood for locals is set to disappear," according to Bowery Boogie.
Many shoppers fondly described the grocery store on Yelp as the perfect place for finding cheaper Asian specialities—hot sauce, dumpling wrappers, bok choy and udon noodles—without having to go to Chinatown.

"Haters - This ain't Whole Foods. It's a Chinese super market. It smells like fish, there are funky dried mushrooms, selection can be a bit spotty sometimes, and probably nothing is organic. Hoity-toity folks can head on over to $$Union Market$$ if they can't handle it. You're not here to buy the best, you're here to get decent groceries without spending $50!"

The 4,700 square-foot space can support six small store locations, which allows for one store renting the entire space, or individual stores renting each space independently, according to the Craigslist listing.

"The space is perfectly suited for a restaurant, bar, convenience store, supermarket, or retail," the listing says.
