Piece Of Metal Falls 30 Feet, Wounds Worker At Two Bridges Tower

A piece of metal plummeted 30 feet and struck a construction worker at the massive Lower East Side project, officials said.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — The city slapped the massive One Manhattan Square project with a partial stop work order after a piece of metal plummeted 30 feet and struck a construction worker, according to the Department of Buildings.

A site safety manager at Extell Development's condo project contacted the city's Department of Buildings on July 26 after the metal fell about 30 feet and struck the worker's shoulder while they were in a lift performing steel work. No ambulance was called to the 250 South Street site because the worker only suffered a minor injury, a Department of Buildings spokesman said.

The city issued a violation and a partial stop work order for the dangerous working conditions. Once the site's contractor provides the city with a clear plan for safely resuming steel work on the lift, the partial stop work order will be lifted, according to a Department of Buildings spokesman.

One Manhattan Square stands 80 stories tall, with 815 residential units and a slew of over the top amenities include a bowling alley, a private theater and a spa. The skyscraper is the first of a handful planned for the area to rise in the largely low-rise, low-income neighborhood.

Any fines or penalties levied against the project for the violation will be determined by the city's Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.
