3 Arrested After Man Sees Them Driving His Stolen Car: Nassau PD

Police say the trio fled the scene, and officers used dogs and helicopters to find them hiding in a backyard.

ELMONT, NY — Three people were arrested Friday night after Nassau County police say a man saw them driving his stolen car around his neighborhood.

According to police, a 37-year-old man was driving east on Hempstead Turnpike, near the intersection of Stone Street, in Elmont at 11:10 p.m. when he saw a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe pulling into a Sunoco gas station. The man thought it was his car, which he had reported stolen.

The man pulled into the gas station and confronted the driver of that car, police said. The driver and two passengers then fled the scene on foot.

Officers arrived on the scene. After a search involving police dogs and helicopters, the three were found in the backyard of a house on Jacob Street, police said. They were all arrested without incident.

Joshua Mayes, 19, of Atlantic Avenue, Freeport, was charged with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree criminal trespassing, third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle and first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.

Mia Escobar, 18, of Raisig Avenue, Valley Stream, as well as a 16-year-old girl, were both charged with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle.

All three were arraigned on Sunday.
