A Call To Honor Those Long Islanders Lost To The Coronavirus

A local couple is trying to create a movement across Long Island to remember those lost during the pandemic.

FRANKLIN SQUARE, NY — A Long Island couple is calling on her neighbors around the area to join in remembering the thousands of people who have died from the coroanvirus over the past year.

Franklin Square Civic Association members Deborah and Robert Salant are asking people across the county to put electric candles in their windows through the month of April to honor those who have died during the pandemic, both here in Nassau and around the country.

“We wanted to do something symbolic honoring victims of this pandemic, while showing concern and compassion for those who lost loved ones to the coronavirus,” Deborah Salant said.

The Salants started by reaching out to their fellow members of the Franklin Square Civic Association, who in turn reached out to the governments of Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead.

Hempstead Town responded, and is encouraging all its residents to put electric candles in their windows next month.
