Dozens Protest Circus in Oceanside

LION protesters spoke out against the Cole Bros. Circus, which spent three nights in Oceanside this week.

Dozens of protesters mobilized in Oceanside Wednesday night to speak out against a circus that was staying in town.

Members of Long Island Orchestrating for Nature protested outside the circus, which was part of a fundraiser for the Oceanside Fire Department.

“Any animal circus profits off of the use and abuse of animals,” said LION Vice President Julie Cappiello, whose family performed in and formerly owned circuses. “My family history is tarnished with animal abuse. Circuses should end the animal acts and celebrate the beauty of human performances, much like Cirque de Solei and Circus Vargas have done.”

Around 30 protesters stood outside the circus, officials said.

“If the Oceanside Fire Department chooses to do a humane fundraiser, I personally will volunteer my time and urge members of my organization to do so as well,” Cappiello added. “We would love to help not just the Oceanside Fire Department, but any venue currently using or considering to use Cole Bros. Circus in choosing a more humane fundraiser that everybody can get behind.”
