February 5, 2019; West Hempstead, NY – The Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) and the West Hempstead Library, located at 500 Hempstead Avenue, West Hempstead, NY 11552, are inviting Long Island parents and their children to the free “Professionals in STEM” program taking place at West Hempstead Library on Monday, February 11, 2019 from 7:00p.m. – 8:30 p.m. where they will hear from a panel of STEM experts on careers in STEM, what they are, and what they pay. Panelist speakers will include: Michael Passantino, VP of Trinity Solar; Armandio D’Accordo, CEO of CMIT Solutions; Dr. John Tanacredi, Director of CERCOM; and Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Director of CSTL.
Supported by a New York State Regional Economic Development grant, the purpose of this program and the West Hempstead STEM Center is to offer hands-on family STEM education in a fun environment to assist people with understanding and learning about the many advantages that STEM careers have to offer.
“Only eight percent of our nation’s young people have indicated an interest in STEM careers,” stated Dr. Havasy, Director of CSTL, a not-for-profit organization with a mission of encouraging science learning and literacy that develops programs for people of all ages and utilizes inquiry-based learning as its foundation for program development. “This is in stark comparison to 73 percent of Singapore students and 41 percent of students from Finland. If more people do not understand the importance of STEM and how these careers help innovation, then the United States will be left behind.”
