LI Nursing Students Make Care Packages For Coronavirus Front Line

Nassau County nursing student launches a campaign to donate meals and care baskets to those on the pandemic's front lines.

LYNBROOK, NY --A nursing student from Lynbrook found her daily routine interrupted when her school closed due to coronavirus. Rather than focus on her own hardships, Ginamarie Isler and a few of her classmates decided to try to make a small difference by creating care packages for front line workers during the pandemic.

"The recent devastating effects of COVID 19 have shaken most of our worlds, and our day to day routines have been not only altered but for some of us have come to a complete halt. Especially in New York. The first responders, health care professionals, police officers, and people of New York have experienced some of the most horrific things that this country has ever seen. My classmates and I have poured our hearts and souls into trying to make a difference for our nurses, health care professionals, police, FDNY and EMS workers," she told Patch.

Isler has set up a GoFundMe page called "Help the NY Heroes" and has been able make over 20 care packages and deliver meals to hospitals across Long Island. The nursing students are also creating custom baskets for fire departments and EMS teams with a brand of coffee called “Fire Department Coffee” and snacks in those as well.

"We want to be able to do more surprise dinners for [front line workers] and baskets," Isler said.

So far the Help the NY Heroes group has donated baskets and meals to hospitals in Nassau County, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Rockland County and police and fire stations in New York City and Lynbrook.
