Lynbrook HS Guidance Department Hosts Alumni Panel

Lynbrook High School seniors recently benefited from the voice of experience, as a panel of graduates of the Class of 2012 and the Class of 2013 returned to their alma mater to share valuable advice about what to expect in college.

 The Alumni Panel was introduced this year by the high school guidance department to better prepare seniors for that all-important freshman year. Panel members touched on everything from clubs, roommates and dining hall food to the rigors of academic life and the importance of taking personal responsibility for their own work.

“In college you have to learn to be more independent,” said Angela Shickling. “The professor hands you the syllabus and it is up to you to keep up with the work.”

 “There are no worksheets or daily homework assignments,” said Matt Ellentuck. “You just have to keep up for yourself.”

“I joined the college paper,” said Charlie Lanter, when asked about clubs. “My school also offers internships with local businesses.”

“Reach out to your professor if you are struggling,” advised Maria Randazzo. “It will really help if you make the effort to make a connection.”

The panel members concurred that Lynbrook High School had prepared them well for the rigors of college studies. They all agreed that their AP courses and the senior project required for graduation provided them with a great foundation for college. 

They also reminded this year’s seniors that even after graduation, Lynbrook High School teachers and other resources are still there to provide them with support and guidance as they make the transition to college.

The senior participants agreed that it was helpful for them to be able to benefit from the experiences of these recent graduates.

This event was organized by Guidance Chairperson Laurie Mitchell, with the assistance of the high school guidance staff, as part of an effort launched last spring to enhance student support services.
